Despite getting off to a slow start yesterday, the official release of the Firefox 3 browser was downloaded 8.3 million times (that’s the unofficial tally as of 11:16 AM PT today). Mozilla beat its goal of 5 million downloads by 3 million and set a new world record! All right, there was no previous world record, but it still represents a massive one-day adoption rate.
According to Mozilla Foundation CEO John Lilly, that gives Firefox 3 a four percent market share of browsers worldwide straight out of the gate. Mozilla’s servers sent out 83 terabytes of data during that time, and at the peak there were 17,000 downloads per second (with an average of 4,000 per second). That explains why I had to wait so long to download my copy. The browser was downloaded in 200 different countries, with the top ten being
U.S.
Germany
Japan
Spain
UK
France
Iran
Italy
Canada
Poland
Yes, Firefox 3 is big in Iran and Poland. IE doesn’t stand a chance.

espite the fact that AMD is half dead because of its tiny CPU market share, the company is currently making the preparations for a worth-mentioning Nehalem competitor. The chip manufacturer's upcoming 45-nanometer chips in the Deneb and Propus families will undergo a significant micro-architecture redesign, also known as K10.5 Rev. D.
The D silicon stepping in the 45-nanometer process will be code-named Hydra and is alleged to be AMD's true response to Intel's Nehalem CPU micro-architecture. This silicon stepping will introduce an L2 cache level of 1MB per core, which means that the upcoming processors will enjoy twice as much cache memory over the existing K10.5 silicon.
More than that, the new micro-architecture will also bring the much-hyped High-K metal gate technology that has been jointly developed by AMD and IBM using 45nm SOI (silicon-over-insulator) cores. The first 45-nanometer SOI cores, however, will be introduced earlier, in both Deneb and Propus chips.
Hydra will also bring a huge, 6 MB L3 cache pool that will be shared among all the processor's cores. The new chip is expected to hit the market in at least eight-core configurations, although the company is likely to introduce them as eight-core native designs, rather than the recently unveiled MCM (Multi Chip Module).
As far as the brute computing performance is concerned, it is estimated that Hydra processors will be able to deliver stock core frequencies of over 3 GHz.
It is currently unknown whether it will be as overclockable as Intel's counterparts, but this is highly unlikely to happen, given AMD's conservative stance when it comes to tweaking its chips. Intel took the same approach with the Nehalems, and rumor has it that only the Bloomfield-based high-end offerings will be ale to go beyond the default clock speed.
The Hydra chips will arrive on the market in mid-2009 or even later and in the meantime, Intel's Nehalems will be the only high-end alternative.

In this controversy, however, Google does not have the "We didn't do it" card at its disposal. That's because Google itself has renamed the Persian Gulf.
Mother Jones blogger Justin Elliott explains:
The problem comes in the form of a letter to Google's CEO from the National Iranian American Council loudly protesting the inclusion in Google Earth of the term "Arabian Gulf" - along with the more common "Persian Gulf."
Only a few years ago, in 2004, Google's co-founders told shareholders that "focused objectivity" was a trait "most important in Google's past success" and "most fundamental for its future." But that was before Google Earth. And if the two complaints this month show anything, it's that a map is a highly subjective thing. Including "Arabian Gulf" was a classic hedge on Google's part, probably an attempt to strive for that ideal of objectivity. NIAC's letter, however, explains the term's somewhat untoward history:
You can read that letter here.
The group says that the National Geographic Society "made the same error" in 2004 and willingly corrected itself after NIAC complained.
Google has yet to reply to inquiries from Mother Jones.

Head of Iranian Space Organization said on Tuesday Kavoshgar-1 (Explorer-1) has transmitted data from 200 km above the earth’s hemisphere and the satellite ’Omid’ will be launched in summer.
Ahmad Talebzadeh noted that Kavoshgar-1 was launched in two different phases, IRNA reported.
“In the first phase, the first section of Kavoshgar-1 separated after 100 seconds and returned to earth by parachute,“ he added.
The official pointed out that in the second phase, Kavoshgar-1 began transmitting data, which are being currently analyzed.
“Omid telecommunications satellite will also be launched in summer by using the data transmitted by Kavoshgar-1 to earth,“ he said.
He opined that no space project can become operational in a short period.
“We have skilled manpower in the field of aerospace technology. Space technology courses have also been launched at the doctorate level,“ he added.
Talebzadeh further said different tests should be conducted for upgrading security and standards of space activities.
